Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss Orders Police Chief Back to Work

Irvington, NJ, July 22, 2014:

Irvington Police Chief Michael Chase was ordered back to work effective July 16, 2014, in a memorandum issued by Township Attorney Ramon Rivera. Chief Chase has been on indefinite leave since December 2012. At the time, he was the head the of Irvington Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit. He had served on the force for 37 years and moved up the ranks to become Chief in 2002.

Chief Chase has been on indefinite leave with pay, for a year and a half. “Paying the Chief’s full salary for an indefinite period and receiving nothing in return, is an unjust burden on the taxpayers of Irvington.  It was time to do something and I did it,” said Irvington Mayor Vauss. “In exchange for his salary, Chief Chase will be fulfilling his responsibilities at the Police Department.  You work – you get paid. It is totally unacceptable that the residents of Township pay for services not rendered.”

Chief Chase will be reporting to Police Director Tracey Bowers who was confirmed in the position on July 1, 2014.
