Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss, the Irvington Fire, Police, and Health Departments Invite the Public to Walk for Breast Cancer

On Sunday, October 11th, Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss will lead walkers down the streets of Irvington to promote breast cancer awareness. The Breast Cancer Awareness Walk is co-sponsored by the Irvington Fire, Police and Health Departments. It was the brainchild of Firefighter Mike Scott, who has organized and promoted the walk for several years. It will take place from 12:30pm until 2:30pm and will begin at 1 Civic Square at the Memorial in front of the Fire and Police stations.

“We are serious about beating breast cancer,” said Mayor Vauss. “By joining Mike in this tremendous effort to bring hundreds of people together for the walk, we are spreading the word and information about the symptoms and treatment for breast cancer. We are also showing support for and honor to our family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors who have fought or are fighting cancer.”

Fireman Mike Scott, who is also the president of IAFF Local 305, brought the idea of the walk to the Irvington Fire Department about six years ago. “Although I didn’t personally know anyone who was fighting breast cancer, I felt the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk would be a great way for the Irvington Fire Department to give back to the community,” said Scott. The first walk had 50 attendees. The walk last year had more than 300 participants.
