Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss, the Irvington Fire, Police, and Health Departments Lead Most Successful Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Yet

On Sunday, October 26th, Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss led more than three hundred (300) walkers down the streets of Irvington to promote breast cancer awareness. The Breast Cancer Awareness Walk was co-sponsored by the Irvington Fire, Police and Health Departments. It was the brainchild of Firefighter Mike Scott, who, until this year, singlehandedly organized and promoted the walk.

“We are going to kick the heck out of cancer,” said Mayor Vauss.  “By bringing hundreds of people together, we are unifying as a community to spread the word about the symptoms and treatment for breast cancer.  We are also showing support for and honor to our family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors who have fought or are fighting cancer. They are not alone in their battles. ”

Fireman Mike Scott, who is also the vice –president of IAFF Local 305, brought the idea of the walk to the Irvington Fire Department about five years ago. “Although I didn’t personally know anyone who was fighting breast cancer, I felt the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk would be a great way for the fire department to give back to the community,” said Scott. “The first walk had 50 attendees.  This walk, our 5th, had more than 300 walkers. I am proud how successful it has become.”
